Reds Continue to Disappoint After FA Cup Exit

The latest woe to vex Liverpool came in the FA Cup over the weekend.

Brighton & Hove Albion inflicted it on the Reds after a come-from-behind 2-1 win in the fourth round of the league to knock the holders out while securing a place in the fifth round.

The defeat for Liverpool came after a dull, scoreless draw at home against Chelsea in the Premier League.

Also, Brighton whipped visiting Liverpool 3-0 in the main competition two weeks ago.

At this juncture in the campaign, the Reds were expected to be in the top four of the top-tier tournament, at least.

But nope. Instead, they are in the ninth spot with 29 points after 19 games. They are 10 points behind fourth placers Manchester United and 11 off leaders Arsenal.

MITOMA HITS WINNER

Winger Kaoru Mitoma scored in stoppage time to lift the Seagulls past the Reds at the Amex Community Stadium.
With the game appearing to be headed to a draw, the Japanese fired in from close range in the 92nd minute.

Jurgen Klopp's side went up 1-0 in the 30th when central midfielder Harvey Elliott slotted into the bottom corner from Mohamed Salah's pass.

But the Seagulls equalized when right wing-back/right-back Tariq Lamptey's shot from distance deflected heavily off defender Lewis Dunk to sail into the back of the net.

A year ago, Liverpool was tipped to win four trophies in one season as they found themselves fighting for honors in the Premier League, Champions League, League Cup, and FA Cup.

DANGER ZONE

However, they bagged just two, the Carabao Cup and FA Cup, and they are now in danger of closing this season with nothing as they struggle to regain their old fearsome and razor-sharp form.

There's still time for Liverpool to secure a top-four Premier League finish and achieve success in the Champions League, but they will need to display the fighting resolve of the champions.

The Reds seek to recover in the Premier League when they face hosts Wolverhampton Wanderers on February 4, while Brighton, unbeaten in their last three PL games, host Bournemouth on the same day.
