It’s All Over for Bruce at Newcastle

Steve Bruce is out as Newcastle United manager. In as interim boss is Graeme Jones.

On Wednesday, Bruce left the Magpies by mutual consent just 13 days after the club’s £305-million takeover by a Saudi Arabian group was finalised.

The 60-year-old Bruce charge of his 1,000th match as a manager during their 3-2 loss at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League last Sunday -- his only game as Magpies boss under the new owners.

Bruce said there were ``highs and lows’’ and that he hoped the new owners could ``take the club forward’’.

Newcastle said the appointment of a new manager ``will be announced in due course’’.

Jones was appointed at his first managerial position at newly-promoted Championship club Luton Townb in May 2019. He left the position in April 2020, going on to serve in assistant coaching roles at Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

Among those tipped to replace Bruce are Rafael Benitez, Antonio Conte, Lucien Favre, Paulo Fonseca, Steven Gerrard, Eddie Howe and Frank Lampard, among others.

``I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club,’’ said Bruce, who is understood to have received in the region of £8 million after his contract was paid up in full.

He added: ``I'm 60 years old and I don't know if I want to put her through it again. We've got a good life so, yeah, this will probably be me done as a manager - until I get a phone call from a chairman somewhere asking if I can give them a hand. Never say never, I've learnt that.’’

The Magpies have made a winless start to the Premier League season and sit second from bottom after three draws from their opening eight games.

Bruce was appointed Magpies manager in July 2019 and achieved finishes of 13th and 12th in his two full seasons in charge.
