Players and Teams to watch in Champions League

The Champions League has reached its exciting rounds and the round-of-16 features plenty of them whom we should watch out for.

Teams fighting to reach the quarterfinals are also in the fray as they aim to go deeper and eventually claim the coveted trophy in Europe’s most prestigious tournament amongst champion clubs.

Let’s take a look at some of the players and teams to watch out for:


Cristiano Ronaldo

The Juventus main man is currently the all-time leading goalscorer in the tournament with 129 goals in 167 appearances. Ronaldo will try to lead Juve to the quarterfinals against Olympique Lyonnais.

Lionel Messi

He has 114 goals so far and is second behind Ronaldo. The Barca talisman is out to carry the load in the Catalans’ bid to advance to the last eight as they square off with Napoli in the last-16.

Robert Lewandowski

The Bayern Munich striker has been carrying most of the load in scoring for the German giants this season. He has 63 goals netted so far in the CL.


The Brazilian ace is expected to lead the French champions after Kylian Mbappe has been put in doubtful status due to an ankle injury.

Neymar scored one of PSG’s goals in their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the second leg at Parc des Princes last March that earned them a last-eight ticket with a 3-2 aggregate, overturning a 1-2 deficit after the first leg in Dortmund.

Marcel Sabitzer

The RB Leipzig midfielder will be a threat for Atletico’s defence. He scored a brace in their 3-0 win at home over Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of their last-16 tie that gave them a 4-0 win on aggregate and a set in the quarterfinals.


Atletico Madrid
Atletico knocked out defending champions Liverpool 3-2 after extra time at Anfied last March for a 4-2 aggregate to reach the quarterfinals.

Can they go deeper than that stage? That we have to see.

Atletico hs yet to win a CL title, having placed seond three times (1974, 2014 and 2016).

Real Madrid

The winningest club in the tournament with 13 titles are aching to lift another trophy. They last won in 2018.

Bayern Munich

The German champions last won the title in 2013. They won four trophies before that (2001, 1976, 1975 and 1974) and are bent to get back atop European football supremacy.


The Catalans have also five titles, the last coming in 2015. They previously wn in 2011, 2009, 2006 and 1992.


With Ronaldo around, can Juve end their 24-year wait? The Italian champions last won in 1996 after claiming their first trophy in 1985.

RB Leipzig

The German side are facing Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals in this exciting duel to be held at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal on Aug. 14.

Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain

They square off in another quarterfinals pairing on Aug. 13 at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon Portugal.
